Antico casato, presente nella storia di Bologna sin da secolo XII, ma, originariamente, era conosciuto come Sabbadini. La famiglia, d'altronde, riconosce come capostipite un Calorio Sabbatino che, nel 1180, ottenne dall'Imperatore Federico I il titolo di Conte, per sé e per i suoi discendenti. Nel 1228 i suoi componenti sono annoverati tra i Geremei popolani e giurarono la pace con l'opposta fazione. Aderirono poscia alla parte Maltraversa contraria ai Pepoli. Tancredino fu uno dei sapienti cui venne commesso indagare le cause dei tumulti cittadini nel 1323. Guido fu uno dei primari Capitani delle milizie, fu dei congiurati a liberare Bologna dal Legato pontificio nel 1329. A causa della loro autorità furono osteggiati dalle avverse fazioni e più volte ebbero a partire esili e confische. Queste vicende causarono la formazione di diverse diramazioni che si stanziarono nel Friuli, in Toscana ed in altre parti, ed il cognome originario assunse le forme
