Antichissima ed illustre famiglia romana, della quale la storia e la genealogia documentate risalgono a Raino, Conte della Sabina nel sec. IX. Ramo della celebre casata dei Crescenzi, che primeggia nella storia di Roma dalla metà del sec. X alla metà del sec. XI, estende il proprio dominio contemporaneamente nella Sabina e nella Marittima e, col difendere Roma dal potere imperiale e da quello papale, finchè vinta, dopo asprissime lotte dai Conti di Tuscolo e costretta a diventare loro alleata, perde l'antica potenza. Lando, figlio di Raino, nato in Foro Novo, oggi Vescovo, da Canonico Lateranense, fu eletto Sommo Pontefice per il potere della sua consanguinea Marozia; interpose la sua autorità perchè Berengario e Rodolfo, figli del Conte Guido, non facessero guerra e, con Amedeo Conte di Borgogna, restaurò la chiesa di Foro Novo, distrutta dai Saraceni; trasferì da Bologna a Ravenna l'Arcivescovo Giovanni, che fu suo successore col nome
