E' una delle più antiche famiglie forlivesi. Saffo e Ughetto sono menzionati fino dal 1170 nell'atto di donazione fatto dal vescovo Alessandro di Forlì all'Abbazia di S. Mercuriale. Nel 1306 Zaffolino ebbe in custodia il castello di Ronta, nel Cesenate, e fu celebre e fortissimo capitano; Andrea (1439) professore all'Università di Pisa godè fama di eminente maestro; Marco Antonio fu filosofo rinomato e Giuseppe, medico eccellentissimo. Nel secolo XVIII fiorivano in Forlì cinque rami di questa illustre famiglia ed ai giorni nostri uno solo ne è rimasto, e discende, in linea retta, da Francesco (1390), padre di Saffo, che a sua volta ebbe Tomaso, da cui nacque Orazio, che fu padre di altro Tomaso, che generò Orazio il quale da Vittoria ebbe Andrea, dottore di leggi.
