Antica ed assai nobile famiglia francese, di chiara ed avita virtù, le cui diramazioni sono fiorite nobilmente anche in Italia, Austria, Germania e Svizzera, nonché nel Nuovo Mondo. Il ramo più antico ha avuto origine in Poitou, ove risulta presente sin dal XIV secolo con un Jean, commissario delle monete di Poitou e Saintonge, ma è da quello stabilitosi in Amboise che è uscito uno dei personaggi più noti di questo casato, il filosofo illuminista Louis Claude (Amboise, 18 gennaio 1743 – Aulnay-sous-Bois, 13 ottobre 1803), il quale propose una lettura dei testi cristiani alla luce del neoplatonismo e della tradizione qabbalistica, mettendo l'accento sull'interiorità della ricerca mistica e rigettando la scolastica. In Baviera la famiglia ottenne il fregio di nobiltà solo nel 1770, al dì 4 luglio, ma fu qui che ottenne il titolo di Conti del S.R.I, in data 17 dicembre 1785. In Austria i Saint Martin hanno
