La più illustre delle diramazioni italiane; famiglia antichissima de hospitio di Chieri. Ne parlò con sintesi mirabile che qui giova riportare, un Cesare, il più grande della grande famiglia. Lasciando i sogni genealogici, noterò due belle glorie nostre. La prima, per vero dire, é solamente tradizionale: dicono che cacciati di lor città, data al fuoco da Federico Barbarossa, combattessero poi, da fuorusciti, coi collegati di Lombardia per l'indipendenza d'Italia, e che nuovi Fabii, cinquanta di essi rimasero sul campo di battaglia e di vittoria a Legnano. La seconda gloria é più provata, quando nel sec. XIV la città di Chieri s'assoggettò ai principi di Savoia, un ramo dei Salbo Bertone (ramo esso dei Salbo) non si volle assoggettare, ed esulò ad Avigonne in Francia, dove prese nome di Crillon e da questo ramo uscì quello che fu detto il "brave Crillon" (Autobiografia; 2).
