Procedem os Saldanhas de Bernado del Carpio, casado com D. Galinda de Lara, ele famoso herói, e descendem também de D. Sancho Dias de S. senhor da vila de Saldanha, que vivia por 870. Diogo Lopes de S. filho de Fernão Lopes de S., senhor de Miranda e Castanhar, em Castela e contador de D. João II, soberano do mesmo reino, teve os mesmos senhorios, serviu D. Henrique IV, foi seu embaixador a Roma e passou a Portugal com a Excelente Senhora D. Joana mulher de D. Afonso V, do qual foi mordomo-mor, embaixador a Roma e servium, também de secretário da Rainha. Casou com D. Maria ce Bodadilha, filha de Tibério Rodrigues dde Bodadilha, fidalgo de Guadalajara. Deste casamento houve geração por onde se difundiu o apelido de S. Outra família homónima descendente, por legítima varonia, de Manuel-Francisco dos Santos, natural da freg. de santa Cristina de Mansores, do extinto conc. de Fermedo, hoje do conc. de Arouca, e de sua mulher Ana de Jesus, que foram pais de João da Silva Marques do Rosário casado com Marcela-Angélica Nunes dos Reis, filha de Theotónio Nunes de Pinho e mulher Luísa-Caetana, naturais e moradores em Arrifana, termo de Oliveira de Azeméis. Daquele casal foi filho o dr. José-António Nunes de Saldanha da Silva (1796-1868), bacharel formado em Direito (U.C.), juiz de fora da comarca de Vila do Conde, advogado, etc., senhor da casa da Terça, em Mansores, que c. em São João da Madeira em 1833, com D. Ana de Oliveira Camossa (1805-1874), filha de João de Oliveira Camossa.
