Si crede che questa famiglia discenda da un ramo dei Salimbeni di Siena, della quale famiglia ne assunse lo stemma, trasferendosi circa il 1428 a Velletri, ove venne ascritta quella nobiltà, coprendo le prime cariche sia civili che militari. Fu un Salimei che, nel 1529, comandando le milizie di Velletri, sconfisse gli spagnoli che si avanzavano per occupare quella città, aiutando poi e sostenendo Pier Francesco Orsini, che si era reso padrone di Arsoli. Nelle Cronache cittadine di Velletri risulta che un Girolamo nel 1540 fu inviato ambasciatore a Roma al Pontefice Paolo III ed avendo assolto onorevolmente il suo mandato, fu il I° gennaio 1542 eletto rettore della città di Velletri e nel successivo 1546 acclamato priore, carica che sostenne fino al 1552. Un ramo di questa famiglia, trasferitosi a Roma, acquistò in palazzo in via dei Coronari ed un Giovanni Battista nel 1769 fu creato conte. La famiglia
