La famiglia è originaria da Domodossola (Mozio). Giovanni Antonio, marito di Cecilia Borgognoni, fu il primo che andò ad abitare in Bologna circa nel 1769, ove con gli onesti suoi traffici andò accumulando una cospicua ricchezza. Questi due coniugi ebbero parecchi figli: Giuseppe, che diventò canonico in S. Maria Maggiore; Carlo, che sposò Angela Nobili e non lasciò discendenza; Maria, che andò sposa al dott. Giacomo Alessandrini Vizzani e Luigi, nato l'8 dicembre 1762. Uscito dalle scuole del Seminario Arcivescovile, si diede agli studi legali nella pontificia Università bolognese ove si laureò in ambo le leggi, con molta lode, il 2 dicembre 1784. Ascritto al Collegio Civile l'11 ottobre 1785, e al Canonico il 29 marzo 1788, nell'anno 1794 ottenne la cattedra di gius civile, poi altra di gius canonico che tenne sino al 1800. Nel 1801 fu eletto ai comizi convocati a Lione, ove parlò con forte animo,
