Apellido de origen genovés. A principios del Siglo XVI se estableció en Tenerife, el noble de Génova Juan Bautista de S., (hijo de los muy magníficos patricios Jácome de S. y María Spínola) con su mujer Leonor de Arnao. De este matrimonio fueron hijos los Doctores Don Juan y Don Pedro de S., Arcediano de Gran Canaria el primero y de Fuerteventura el segundo, ambos Dignidades de la Santa Iglesia Catedral de Las Palmas y varones de gran autoridad y virtud; Don Antonio de S. que sigue la línea y Doña Leonor de S., que casó con Félix Cairasco de Figueroa, siendo progenitores de los Condes de la Vega Grande de Guadalupe. El Capitán de Artillería Don Antonio de S. Arnao y Spínola, Regidor perpetuo de Canaria, casó con su prima Doña Simona de Algirofo y Ossorio, también descendiente de nobles familias genovesas, con la que tuvo cinco hijos.
