La dotta Bologna fu culla dei M., famiglia nobile e prodiga di uomini insigni, le cui gesta sono note attraverso una svariata serie di pubblicazioni, fra le quali l'ultima di D. Giuseppe Fornasini. L'11 luglio 1305 il cardinale Napoleone degli Orsini partecipava alla Signoria di Venezia che, mentre cercava di pacificare Bologna, lacerata dalla fazione interna, molti di quei cittadini lo assilorono nella dimora per ucciderlo assieme al vescovo Uberti. Ne seguì la confisca dei beni dei ribelli a vantaggio della S. sede, la perdita dei feudi e la scomunica pubblicata nei dì festivi nelle chiese di Bologna e distretto, finchè perdureranno i re nella ribellione. Però fra i membri della famiglia e la Corte di Roma, non si acuirono soverchiamente i dissidi, che anzi in non breve ne seguì la riconciliazione della famiglia che si ebbe in ricompensa feudi ed onori.
