Storica famiglia di chiara, antichissima origine. Dalla Provenza, ove era già illustre e potente per numerose e cospicue signorie, passò in Italia alla venuta di Carlo I d'Angiò, fra gli altri con un Barral, già signore dello stato di balzo (Balcio, Baltio, Baucio, Baux). Figli di Barral furono Cecilia, detta per la sua bellezza "Passerose" sposa di Amedeo IV conte di Savoia, e Bertrando che distintosi nella battaglia di Benevento venne, in seguito, da re Carlo creato conte di Avellino, divenendo capostipite di uno dei più illustri rami della famiglia, ramo che s'estinse nel 1426 con Alice del Balzo vedova di Corrado, conte di Fribourg e Neuchâtel. Altro Bertrando, signore di Berre, seguì Carlo d'Angiò, coi figli Ugo e Bertrando II. Da quest' ultimo ebbe inizio altro illustre ramo della Casa, quello dei conti di Montescaglioso e duchi d'Andria, arricchito in seguito di altri eminenti titoli, come di conte di
