Ancient and noble Italian family, originally from Bologna, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread over the centuries. Over time, and in its many branches, the name of this family has been transcribed in different ways; in fact, prior to the crystallization of the registry, cognominal variations, especially with regard to vowels, were a very widespread phenomenon. In any case, the first figure of which we have heraldic memory is a Matteo, son of Rodolfo, who at the time of Federico Barbarossa was sent ambassador for the city of Bologna to the Congress of Peace in Constance. Tradition has it that this Matteo had only one daughter, named Samaritana, who married a Uguccione from Montefiore, with whom she procreated a son to whom she gave the name of her father.
