Da un'antica chiesa, detta San Giovanni de' Donati, nelle cui vicinanze abitava questa antica famiglia, trasse il suo cognome. Azzone di San Giovanni fu console nel 1148; Pietro console di giustizia nel 1109; Arrigo consigliere del Comune nel 1222; Barbato ambasciatore nel 1225 ad Enrico marchese di Savona: Baudano, figlio di Guglielmo, nel 1250 fu rettore della società o compagnia di S. Secondo nel tempo che con altri di sua famiglia stette sicurtà per Asti verso Alba. Manfredo-Secondo e Filippo furono consiglieri della patria, il primo nel 1216, e l'altro nel 1290. Bonino di San Giovanni capo dei Ghibellini, fu scacciato dalla patria quando in Asti rimpatriarono i Soliri nel 1304. Altro ramo. Antica e nobile famiglia, originaria del Veneto. Il commendator G.B. di Crollalanza riporta la blasonatura di questa famiglia nei volumi del suo Dizionario storico blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane.
