Dai genealogisti ispanici, questa antica casata, è annoverata fra le famiglie nobili d'Aragona, Valentia, e Catalogna. Il primo che ritroviamo averla trapiantata in Sicilia fu Ferratonio, nel 1282, a servizio del Re Pietro primo; costui coi suoi figli Nicolò, Francesco, e Giovanni in ricompensa dei servigi, ottenne il governo dell'isola di Malta, e di Gozzo, dal quale furono poscia rimossi dal Re Federico secondo, ed ebbero, i predetti Francesco e Giovanni, il Feudo di Giaesi e la Castellania di San Filippo d'Agiro, mentre Nicolò anche quella di Raginelgi, nel territorio di Caltagirone, e la capitania della città di Palermo, nel 1360. Da costoro pervennero Giovanni e Ferrarone e Nicolò secondo, il quale ebbe la castellania del Castello di Siracusa, e prese per moglie Liandra di Apulia, per il che Raimondo, suo figlio, successe nei beni di Ferren di Apulia a suo Zio materno, che li ebbe confermati dal Re Martino
