Le prime memorie di questa potente famiglia rimontano al XII secolo, nelle persone di Buonaccorso e di Bolso, i quali tennero il consolato in patria, il primo nel 1162 e l'altro nel 1169. Lo stesso Bonaccorso nel 1170 fu uno de' capi dell'esercito pisano contro i Lucchesi. Guido Sancassiani nel 1187 era console dei Pisani in Siria; Simone nel 1365 ambasciatore all'Imperat. Carlo IV; Monaldo conte di Campiglia e pretore di Firenze nel 1389; Giovanni condottiero dei Fiorentini nel 1392; Lodovico vestì l'abito di Malta nel 1595. I Sancassiani ebbero pure il dominio della Pieva di Montefoscolo, per donazione lor fatta dalla famigia de' Griffi, antica signora di quel castello. Di questa famiglia non si hanno più notizie.
