Famiglia valenziana, portata come dice Mugnos in Sicilia nel 1292, da un cavliere Velasquez de Mena a' servigi di re Federico II, da cui la castellania di S. Filippo d'Argirò 1316 ottenne. Da lui un Ilisoldo, in dialetto Misilisoldi,che da re Ludovico 1344 fu fatto castellano di S. Filippo d'Argirò; perlochè i suoi posteri S. cognominaronsi. La famiglia Sanfilippo indi si sparse in Palermo e Piazza, vantando capitani giustizieri e giurati. Commendansi: un Desiderio che acquistò la baronia di Grotte 1634 e primo duca di essa 1648, cavaliere gerosolimitano, uomo assai benefico per pie opere e legati di maritaggio nella detta città di Piazza; a lui contemporanea fu suor Maria Caterina morta in odore di santità, come un frà Antonio domenicano riportati dal Pirri; un Tommaso 1650, cav. d'Alcantara, barone di Sortavilla, governatore del Monte di Pietà di Palermo 1698-99, e maestro portulano del regno, la di cui figlia
