Famille valencienne, amenée comme le dit Mugnos en Sicile en 1292, par un chevalier Velasquez de Mena au service du roi Frédéric II, dont le château de S. Filippo d'Argirò obtenu en 1316. De lui un Ilisoldo, en dialecte Misilisoldi, qui par le roi Ludovico 1344 fut nommé châtelain de S. Filippo d'Argirò; parce que sa postérité S. cognominaronsi. La famille Sanfilippo s'est ensuite étendue à Palerme et à Piazza, avec des capitaines d'exécution et des jurés. Commendansi : un Desiderio qui acheta la baronnie de Grotte en 1634 et premier duc de celle-ci en 1648, chevalier de Jérusalem, homme très bénéfique pour les œuvres pieuses et legs de mariage dans ladite ville de Piazza ; Sa contemporaine était sœur Maria Caterina qui mourut en odeur de sainteté, comme un frère dominicain Antonio ramené par Pirri ; un Thomas 1650, cav. d'Alcantara, baron de Sortavilla, gouverneur du Monte di Pietà
