Tra le prime case di suprema, e antica nobiltà nel nostro Regno, stimata sempre fù questa de' quali non essendo nota all'Ammirato l'origine, disse ritrovarsene memoria prima del vecchio Carlo Rè di Napoli, affermando, che da due Casali della Terra di Faicchia, l'uno detto Maffa superiore, e l'altro Maffia inferiore, ò vogliam dire di sotto, e di sopra, fusse stato fatto il Castello di S., quindi egli si avvisa i S. più tosto dato,che ricevuto havessero il nome da quel Castello, il che vien confirmato dal Duca della Guardia nel discorso della famiglia Castelli; ma da qual authore, o scrittura essi havessero cavato, che da quei due Castelli, il Castello di S. fusse stato edificato, non si è potuto da me investigare; certamente però si è ritrovato, ch'i S. più tosto preso, che dato habbino il nome al Castello di S., poiche si vede, che dalla Normandia, passò in Italia
