Procede de Italia, del Príncipe Sangro. La denominación de este título se convirtió en apellido. Pasó a España, y por Real despacho de 25 de Julio de 1791 se concedió la Grandeza de España de primera clase don Pablo S. y de Merode, Príncipe de Castelfranco. En Galicia enlazó con principales familias de aquella región, entre ellas con la de Ros de Olano. Don Melchor S. y Rueda, nacido en La Coruña el 6 de Enero de 1841, y fallecido en Madrid el 30 de Enero de 1909, fué Abogado, Senador Vitalicio, Ministro Plenipotenciario, Consejero de Estado y Gentilhombre de Cámara con ejercicio y servidumbre. Contrajo matrimonio, el 28 de Mayo de 1865, con doña María Antonia Ros de Olano, segunda Marquesa de Guad-el-Gelú y segunda Condesa de Almina, naciendo de esta unión en Madrid, el 1 de Abril de 1869, don Gonzalo S. y Ros de Olano, tercer Marqués
