Questa illustre famiglia trae la sua origine da un Odorisio, che fu primo conte di Sangro nel 1093. Costui era figlio di Berardo Conte di Marzi, che discendeva da Berengario primo conte di Marsi nell'850, il quale era della R. stirpe dei Carolingi. I discendenti di Oderisio presero il nome dalla contea di Sangro, di cui, secondo le consuetudini longobarde, s'intitolarono tutti conti. La casa dei Sangro fu feconda di grandi personaggi che ne accrebbero il lustro, sia per dignità ecclesiastiche, sia per gradi militari ed eminenti cariche sostenute a vantaggio della patria, del principe e di potentati stranieri. Di fatto ai conti di Sangro appartennero i Cardinali Odorisio Abate di Montecassiano creato nel 1112, Gregorio nel 1197, e Gentile che fu poi Legato in Napoli per il Pontefice Urbano VI, nel 1384.
