E' un ramo dell'omonima famiglia di Pavia, trapiantato in Napoli dai fratelli Nicolao e Benedetto chiamativi da Carlo III di Durazzo in qualità di condottieri d'armata, il quale rimasto soddisfatto dei servigi da essi prestatigli, ne li rinumerò donando loro la rocca di Mondragone, molti feudi nel ducato di Sessa ed inoltre quelli di Serra, Felitto, S. Lorenzo e Castro Nuovo. Appartiene a questa casa il celebre poeta latino Jacopo, nato nel 1458 e morto nel 1530. Estinta in una nipote del precedente, maritata a Carlo Mormole gentiluomo napoletano. Lo stemma della famiglia Sannazaro si blasona così: Scaccato di rosso e d'oro. Cimiero: Un'urna antica scaccata d'argento e di nero.
