Família antiga e muito nobre de origem espanhola, estabelecida na ilha de Malta antes mesmo de ser submetida ao domínio dos cavaleiros de São João de Jerusalém, que se espalharam ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália e do mundo. Os membros desta casa tinham posições e escritórios eminentes, serviram à Ordem Gerosolimitana com talento e fidelidade e muitos se manifestaram em batalha, em defesa da ilha contra os turcos. Publio-Maria Sant foi o primeiro bispo de Lavada, depois de Malta e, finalmente, arcebispo de Rodes. Por Frederico de Aragão, rei da Sicília, com um diploma datado de 12 de novembro de 1372, os santes foram declarados barões de Gariescem e Tabia; feudos confirmados pelo Grão-Mestre da Ordem Gerosolimitano Lascaris de Castellar, em 1º de abril de 1638.
