Apellido de origen gallego. Don Eduardo de Santa Ana y Camaleño fue creado Vizconde de los Asilos en 1891, y Don Manuel María de Santa Ana y Rodríguez, Marqués de Santa Ana, en 1892. En Las Palmas de Gran Canaria se dice que los de este apellido descienden de "santaneros" o incluseros. El Barón de Cobos de Belchite en una de sus magistrales lecciones en el Instituto Salazar y Castro, nos dice: "... que es creencia equivocada al admitir que los apellidos de inclusas y análogos establecimientos de beneficencia, son solamente geográficos, es decir, del sitio donde está radicada la inclusa; más bien se usaron denominaciones de Santos o alusiones a Monasterior y Parroquias. En muchas ocasiones, en siglos cercanamente pasados, más de un bienhechor donó a las inclusas importantes cantidades unidas el uso de su apellido que, desde entonces, debían llevar tantas criaturas desgraciadas ignorantes para siempre de su propio origen". Don Alonso y Don Juan de S., probaron su nobleza en la Real Chancillería de Valladolid en 1623.
