Si ritiene che sia uno dei tanti rami familiari del casato Sant di origine spagnola, stabilitasi nell'isola di Malta ancor prima che questa fosse sottoposta al dominio dei cavalieri di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. La motivazione della variazione cognominale è ignota, si suppone che inizialmente fosse Santacaterina e successivamente, a causa di errori di trascrizione, Santacatterina. Si ritiene che l'arme innalzata sia la medesima dei Sant.
