L'illustre famiglia Santachiesa, di origine spagnuola, si stabilì nell'isola di Malta molto prima che questa fosse sottoposta al dominio dei cavalieri di S. Giovanni di Gerusalemme. Ebbe cariche ed uffici eminenti nella nuova patria, ed i suoi membri servirono con talento e fedeltà l'Ordine Gerosolim., e molti si segnalarono per valore sui campi di battaglia in difesa dell'isola contro i Musulmani ed in mare contro i pirati dell'Africa, e per rara capacità negli uffici di lord-luogotenente, di governatore ecc. Publio-Maria fu primo vescovo di Lavada, poi di Malta, ed infine Arciv. di Rodi. Da Federico d'Aragona re di Sicilia, con diploma del 12 Novembre 1372, i Santachiesa furono dichiarati baroni di Gariescem e Tabia, feudi nell'isola e confermati dal Gran Maestro dell'Ordine Gerosolim. Lascaris de Castellar il 14 Aprile 1638. L'Imperatrice Maria-Teresa, con diploma 30 Marzo 1768, li nominò baroni Fournier de Pausier, per l'Impero Austriaco, e con altro
