Antica ed assai nobile famiglia spagnola, originaria della Catalogna, di chiara ed avita virtù, la quale giunse in Italia in epoca assai remota ed ivi si diversificò in due rami. Il primo prese a dimorare nel Monferrato, ove fu maggiormente conosciuto come Santa Maria. Questo ramo ha goduto dei titoli di: Signori di Moasca e di Terruggia e Consignori di Moasca (1418). Ottaviano, Conte palatino (1435, 13 giugno), si unì in matrimonio con Verdina, da cui ebbe: Bonifacio; Serafino, conte palatino e segretario marchionale; Franceschina; Riccardo; Cristoforo; Antonino; Giovanni Andrea; Oddone; Claudio. L'altro ramo della famiglia prese a dimorare nel Regno di Napoli, ove ha rifulso nobilmente. Tal ramo, infatti, ivi è è riuscito a produrre una serie di uomini che hanno reso illustre il suo nome, nei pubblici impieghi, nelle professioni liberali ed ecclesiastiche e nel servizio militare.
