Antiguo linaje de la Montaña de Santander. Tuvo su primitivo asiento en las tierras de Santillana, cuyo nombre tomó.Fray Rodrigo de Santillana, de la Orden de San Francisco, fué en Méjico, en 1592, Provincial de de la provincia del Santo Evangelio. José Fernández de Santillana era, en 1687, General de una de las flotas que hacían la carrera de India. Las armas que posee el linaje Santillana las hallamos descritas en la Enciclopedia Heráldica y Genealógica Hispano - Americana de A. y A. García Carraffa y son: en campo de azur, dos espadas de plata puestas en sotuer, acompañadas de cuatro estrellas de oro. Otros Santillana usaron una barca en el mar y un marinero en ella. Y otros cuartelaron este escudo con el anterior.También hay testimonios de algunos tratadistas, entre los que no faltan los que asignan al apellido Santillana las armas armas que corresponden al de Santillán.
