Di origine longobarda, le prime sue memorie in Milano rimontano al tempo di Federico II, conforme riferisce il Morgia Paolo nella "Nobiltà di Milano divisa in sei libri" stampato in Milano nel 1595. Lo stesso autore riferisce essere questa una delle più nobili ed antiche famiglie di Milano. Il commendator G.B. di Crollalanza riporta la blasonatura di questa famiglia nei volumi del suo Dizionario storico blasonico delle famiglie nobili e notabili italiane. Lo stemma della famiglia Santirana si descrive così: Di rosso, al leone d'oro, coronato dello stesso. Cimiero: Un angelo nascente, vestito di una dalmatica, colle braccia distese.
