Noble y antiguo linaje, con casas muy principales en Cataluña y Mallorca. Una de las casas catalanas radicó en la comarca del Penedés, de la provincia de Barcelona. Otra en la villa de Aitona, del partido judicial y provincia de Lérida. También tuvo casa solar en Barcelona. Enlazó con distintas familias, como las de Cortada, Amat y Junyent, marqueses de Castellbell y otras. En Mallorca comenzó esta familia con Nicolás S., tesorero del rey don Sancho I de Mallorca y su embajador en Aragón, en 1321. Cuando la extinción de los Templarios compró dicho caballero muchos bienes y tierras, y también "el honor de Sant Martí de Alanzell", con su aladio y diezmo, en el término de la villa de Petra. Su sucesor, Guillermo de S., lo vendió, el 1 de julio de 1391, a Arnaldo Sureda.
