Antiga e ilustre família de origem espanhola, conhecida como Santomauro ou Santo Mauro, de clara e ancestral virtude, passou para o Reino de Nápoles na esteira dos reis aragoneses e posteriormente se espalhou por várias regiões da Itália. As primeiras referências a esta família datam de 1215 quando alguns cavaleiros com este apelido aparecem entre os fiéis do rei D. Sancho VII de Navarra. No Reino de Nápoles a família certamente chega antes do século X VI, instalando-se principalmente na região de Salerno. E, de fato, esta família, ao longo de décadas, sempre conseguiu produzir uma série de homens que tornaram seu nome famoso, no emprego público, nas profissões liberais e eclesiásticas e no serviço militar.
