Illustre e nobile casata europea, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni americane. Una delle linee più antiche dei Santos fiorì in Spagna e, più precisamente, a Santillana del Mar (Santander, Cantabria), ove trovò i natali nel XVII secolo Bartolomé Santos, vescovo di Almeria, León e Siguenza. Nella penisola iberica, altri rami della famiglia Santos fiorirono nobilmente in Andalusia. Anche in Portogallo la casata Santos ramificò moltissimo e i suoi esponenti, in epoche diverse, ricevettero patenti di nobiltà, titoli e feudi. Si ricordino: Sebastião Carvalho dos Santos, signore di Casa da Ponte di Cavez, a Basto, fiorente nel 1750; João da Costa Santos, Cavaliere dell'Ordine di Cristo e Nobile della Casa Reale, fiorente nel 1752; António Pereira dos Santos, Capitano Maggiore di Pombeiro, fiorente nel 1792. In Porto fiorì anche un ramo borghese dei Santos che però ebbe fortuna in Brasile e fu innalzato
