Si vuole originaria dalla Biscaglia e si crede che abbia assunto il cognome attuale da un eremitaggio dedicato al detto Santo e forse vicino ad un castello, proprio di essa famiglia. Passata in Sicilia, godette nobiltà nelle città di Palermo, Trapani e Monte San Giuliano e vestì l'abito di Malta nel 1360. Un Martino acquistò nel 1329 il feudo Falconieri; un Leone possedette il castello e terra di Aquilia nella Val di Noto, che perdette per essersi ribellato ai Martini; un Enrico possedette metà del feudo Mazzaruni che da Perna, sua figlia, fu portato in casa Landolina (1422): un Giorgio, regio cavaliere, fu senatore di Trapani nel 1431-32 e capitano di giustizia nel 1442-43; un Antonio fu senatore di detta città nel 1437-38 e nel 1442-43; un altro Antonio tenne la stessa carica in Palermo nel 1526-27; un Simone fu castellano del castello di Troina nel 1548; un Giovanni fu
