The Sanuto or Sanudo, formerly called Candiani, were the first founders of Venice, and descend from Tommaso Candiano Sanudo, a senator from Padua, who, fleeing the massacres of Attila, sought in 421 an asylum in the Venetian lagoons. His descendants lived first in Eraclea, then in Malamocco, ruling those populations as tribunes. The first doge of Venice Paolo-Lucio Anafesto, elected in 697, is said to belong to this family. Marco Sanuto, who was captain of the sea in 1100, became master of some islands, was elected Duke of the Aegean Sea and created King of Candia, then invested with all his descendants of the islands of Naxos, Pario, Milo, Marine and Andri. This family had five successive doges from father to son, and from brothers to brothers, and many Patriarchs, Bishops, captains, Procurators of S. Marco etc. It was confirmed in the ancestral nobility with sovereign resolution 18 Dec. 1817.
