I Sanudo, anticamente denominati Candiani, furono dei primi fondatori di Venezia, e discendono da Tommaso Candiano Sanudo, senatore padovano, che fuggendo le stragi di Attila, cercò nel 421 un asilo nelle lagune venete. I suoi discendenti abitarono prma in Eraclea, indi a Malamocco, governando quelle popolazioni come tribuni. Si vuole che il primo doge di Venezia Paolo-Lucio Anafesto, eletto nel 697, appartenesse a questa famiglia. Marco Sanudo, che fu capitano da mare nel 1100, si rese padrone di alcune isole, fu eletto Duca del mare Egeo e creato Re di Candia, indi investito con tutti i suoi discendenti delle isole di Nasso, Pario, Milo, Marine ed Andri. Ebbe questa famiglia cinque dogi successivi di padre in figlio, e di fratelli in fratelli, e molti Patriarchi, Vescovi, capitani, Procuratori di S. Marco ecc. Fu confermata nell'avita nobiltà con sovrana risoluzione 18 Dic. 1817.
