Storica famiglia d'origine parmense, di cui si hanno documenti fin dalla metà del secolo XI. Il Litta, il Ronchini nelle sue Aggiunte al Litta, ancora inedite, seguendo lo storico Affò, ricordano per primo un Ugo, vivente nel 1122, e come secondo membro della famiglia un Anselmo, vivente certamente nei primi del duecento. Nell'intervallo di circa un secolo tra i due nominati, nessun altro membro è ricordato dai sudditi. Noi abbiamo potuto rinvenire alcuni dati che dimostrano l'esistenza della famiglia e già in notevole grado di potenza nel secondo precedente a quello in cui viveva quell'Ugo, che nei genealogisti della famiglia figura come capostipite. In un atto del 10 novembre 1066, Giovanni, prete, figlio del fu Pietro, "de loco Sancto Vitali", dona alla canonica di Parma alcune terre poste in Vigociolo.
