L'origine di questa illustre famiglia è molto antica, e le prime memorie di essa rimontano ad un Andrea eletto nel 933 procuratore del corpo di S. Marco. Nel XIII secolo furono del Maggior Consiglio Nicolò dal 1261 al 1264, Paolo dal 1265 al 1269, e Marino nel 1266. Ma chi recò maggior lustro a questa famiglia furono i due dogi Sebastiano, eletto nel 1172 e Pietro eletto nel 1205. Un Marco nel 1299 fu del Consiglio dei XL. Da lui discese Nicolò che era del gran Consiglio nel 1316, e che fu padre di Dinomante, morto nel 1375, e col quale si spense la stirpe della famiglia. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi,
