Ancienne et très noble famille de Sardaigne, probablement d'origine ligurienne, répartie au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. Les Saonas étaient des marchands et en 1692 ils obtinrent la chevalerie et la noblesse héréditaires avec un Giovanni Francesco, qui en 1698 fut admis au poste militaire pendant le parlement du vice-roi Montellano. L'ancienne noblesse de la famille Saona est confirmée par la présence des armoiries dans les armoiries italiennes les plus autorisées.
