Die aus Edessa in Mesopotamien stammende Familie zog in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts nach Livorno, wo er ein florierendes Handelshaus errichtete und mit einem großherzoglichen Reskript vom 18. November 1798 die Staatsbürgerschaft erhielt. Michele von Tommaso, Kapitän des Freiwilligen Carabinieri-Regiments, wurde am 25. Dezember 1804 vom König von Etrurien mit einem Diplom mit seinen Nachkommen des Livorno-Adels ausgezeichnet, und die Deputation über die Regulierung des Adels und der Staatsbürgerschaft in der Toskana ordnete seine Registrierung an im Goldenen Buch der Adligen von Livorno mit Dekret vom 10. Januar 1805. Es war Brauch der ältesten Familien, die nach dem Untergang des Römischen Reiches in der Flut der Barbaren ihre Nachnamen sowie ihre Studien und andere Dinge hatten schön verloren und nur mit einfachen Namen verlassen, um wieder ihre Nachnamen und ihre Abstammung von 'väterlichen Eigennamen und von den wichtigsten zu zeichnen.
