Die Familie stammte aus dem Königreich Neapel, wo sie bemerkenswerte Herrschaften, Lehen und Burgen besaß, einschließlich des Landes Sanazaro, nach dem sie benannt wurde. Pandolfo war vom Imper. Federico II., Gesandter Botschafter in der venezianischen Republik, wurde dann zum Gouverneur einer Provinz ernannt und 1220 zum Grafen von Sanzaro ernannt. Paolo war Hauptmann der Armee von Königin Giovanna II. Und sein Sohn Giuseppe war auch ein Kapitän von großem Ruhm. Die im 16. Jahrhundert in Rom gegründete Familie wurde dem Adel in der Person des Paulus zugeschrieben, der 1548 konservativ war. Sein Vater Alexander hatte von Innozenz XIII. Den Titel eines Grafen erhalten. Mit dem Senatu Consulto am 29. Juli 1768 wurde die Familie wieder in den römischen Adel aufgenommen und mit dem Ministerialdekret am 29. Juli 1906 im Patriziat und im Titel des Grafen anerkannt, der auf alle Männer und ihre Nachkommen ausgedehnt werden kann.
