I Mozzatti - oriundi dal villaggio di Sardagna sopra Trento - pare abbiano, nella prima metà del XVI secolo, smesso questo cognome per assumere quello attuale. L'origine quindi dei membri di detta famiglia si vuole comune a quella dei Mozzi o Mozzati, che nel XII secolo si sarebbero rifugiati, assieme ad altre famiglie ghibelline toscane, nel Perginese (Valsugana). All'inizio del XIII secolo troviamo in tale regione dei Mozzi, che però scompaiono dopo la prima metà del XV sec. per riapparire a Sardagna, ove la tradizione popolare attribuisce tale cognome al fatto che alcuni membri di questa famiglia ebbero mozzate le mani e le orecchie per essere stati ribelli al principe vescovo di Trento nella congiura di Rodolfo Belenzani (1407). Nella Matricola dei cittadini di Trento, compilata nel 1528, troviamo iscritti "Mr. Giacomo e fratello delli Mozzati detti li Sardagni"; in una copia posteriore il cognome Mozzati non appare più e
