Antichissima ed assai nobile famiglia, originaria di Genova, ove godette la primaria carica della Repubblica, dal momento che, il dogado Boemondo Sarino, fu console nel 1146. Dopo di lui Pileo e Domenico furono arcivescovi in patria, il primo nel sec. XV, il secondo nel successivo. Giovan-Paolo fu capo di ventiquattro ambasciatori che, nel 1499, i genovesi inviarono a Luigi XII re di Francia. Un ramo di questa illustre famiglia, con molte ricchezze, sotto Federico II, passò in Sicilia, ove divenne possidente di numerosi feudi e di censi del Regio Demanio di Messina. Nulla diremo dei grandi carichi occupati in quella repubblica, solo ci fermiamo ad un Alessio, residente in Palermo, ad un Antonio, residente in Noto, ad un Uberto, risiedente in Messina; tutti personaggi assai rilevanti sotto il cennato imperatore, e che furono ceppi di tre casati distintissimi.
