Família espanhola que procede do conde Fernão Gonçalves, de Castela que passou várias vezes a Portugal e cujo apelido na língua materna é Sarmiento. Da Torre de Moncorvo e guardas-móres do Sal de Setúbal: família de origem espanhola descendente, por legítima varonia, de Don Baltazar-de-San-Juan de Alarcon, natural de Alcalá de Henares, que c. com Doña Tresa Velasquez, da mesma localidade, cuyo filho, Don Juan Velasquez de Alarcon, passou a Portugal na companhia de sua mulher Doña Catarina Sarmento, natural de Toledo, tendo, f. em Lisboa a 12.12.1620. Destes foi filho D. Tomaz de A. Velasques Sarmento, fidalgo da C. R., comendador das comendas de S.ta Eufémia da Vila de Penela e da de Cazevel, alcaide-mór da dita vila, etc., que c. em 1618 com D. Francisca de Barros Pinto de Queiroz, filha do dr. Pedro de Barros Pinto de Queiroz, natural de Vila Real, fidalgo de cota de armas
