Apellido de origen gallego, descendiente del caballero Salvador Gonzáles, Conde de la Bureda. Este apellido entroncó con la Casa de Lugo en Canarias, por el matrimonio celebrado a principios de 1478, entre Don Pedro Fernández de Saavedra con Doña Constanza Sarmienta, hija segunda de Diego García de Herrera y Doña Inés Peraza, su mujer, Reyes y Señores de las Siete Islas Canarias. Doña Constanza llevaba el apellido de su bisabuela Doña María Sarmienta, mujer de Hernán Pérez de Ayala, su bisabuelo, Riconhombre de Castilla, Alférez Mayor del Pendón de la Banda, Merino Mayor de Guipúzcoa y Embajador en Francia, e hija de Don Diego Gómez Sarmiento y de Doña Leonor de Castilla, sobrina carnal del Rey Don Enrique II. Pedro Fernández de Saavedra el Mozo, Segundo Señor de Lanzarote, tuvo en Doña Iseo de León, doncella noble, hija de Luis de León el Valiente, de la Casa de los Señores
