Originaria della città, dalla quale trasse il nome, si ha notizia di questa famiglia fin dall'epoca Sveva. Ebbe nobiltà in Napoli, al Seggio di Montagna e in Benevento. Un ramo della famiglia Prignano si estinse nella città, che ne aggiunse il nome e l'arma. Ludovico, governatore nella città per il re Ladislao, portò in Napoli la sua famiglia Feudataria di S. Giorgio, in Principato Citra, dall'anno 1641, ne ebbe l'ultima intestazione il 9 settembre 1771 in persona di Antonio per successione di Girolamo, suo padre, al quale detta terra era pervenuta per refuta del suo genitore Andrea. Di detto Antonio fu figliuolo Luigi, padre di Antonio juniore, che provò la nobiltà generosa di sua famiglia in occasione della sua ammissione nelle Reali Guardie del Corpo nel 1841. La famiglia è iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano del 1922 col titolo di nobile (mf.), predicato di S.Giorgio (mf.), pei discendenti da Antonio,
