Si vuole sia una diramazione della casa Sanseverino e che abbia preso il nome dalla contea omonima che essa possedeva verso il 1200. Da Cosenza un ramo fu portato a Tropea, ed un altro a' Lecce, donde ne uscì nel 1465 e vi rientrò nel 1720. Un altro ramo si stabilì in Salerno, da dove si trapiantò in Napoli nel 1800 ed un altro in Messina. Gregorio governatore di Tropea e sindaco dei nobili nel 1566; Giambattista cav. Gerosolim. e commendatore di Cosenza nel 1535; Bernardino, dottissimo in giurisprudenza, consigliere e segret. di stato per l'Imperat. Carlo V che fu suo ospite in una sua villa presso Napoli allorquando fu di ritorno dall'Africa, accompagnò il vicerè Carlo di Lannoy il quale si recò in Lombardia per le contese tra Papa Clemente VII e le truppe cesaree, e fu pure capitano delle armi imperiali in Italia e molto amico del principe
