Antica e nobile famiglia tedesca della Baviera, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in tutto il mondo. I rami principali della famiglia si stabilirono a New York (USA), Austria e Svizzera. La chiara nobiltà della Casa Sauer è confermata dalla sua presenza nella pregevole opera di JB Rietstap (12 maggio 1828–24 dicembre 1891), araldista e genealogista olandese, "The Armorial General", opera monumentale che contiene i blasoni della stemmi di oltre 130.000 famiglie europee. Secondo quanto si tramanda, la famiglia ottenne il titolo di Baroni di Santo Impero il 2 maggio 1630 e di Conti di Santo Impero il 27 agosto 1668. La conferma della sua nobiltà arrivò il 26 marzo 1865. Il ramo austriaco ottenne il riconoscimento di nobiltà il 27 dicembre 1834. Four helmets crowned. Crest: 1 two oyster feathers or and gules between to spades démanché sable; 2 a lion issuant contourné or hoding a ring of the same; 3 two spades sable with the handles in base; 4 a pair of wing conjoined with the arms of the second quarter (on the sinister wing the bend sinister is changed to bend dexter).
