Nei primi decenni del XIV secolo i lucchesi si liberarono dalla nefasta dittatura di Uguccione della Faggiola acclamando, il 12 giugno 1316, a lor capitano e difensore il ghibellino Castruccio Castracani degli Antelminelli; inconsci di essere caduti nelle braccia di uno dei più esecrati capitani di sventura del tempo, lo elessero poco dopo signore a vita; il che gli agevolò la nomina di vicario imperiale nel 1320 da Federico III e quella di duca di Lucca nel 1322 da Lodovico il Bavaro. Per dodici anni la città subì tra sangue e terrore una spietata tirannia sorretta dalle picche delle soldataglie, sovrane della piazza, tutte con grossi conti arretrati da saldare con la giustizia, comandante compreso. Angariate e perseguitate, numerose famiglie altolocate di tendenza guelfa furono espulse o indotte ad abbandonare la città la cui porta dalla quale uscirono fu murata per far intendere ch'era indesiderato il loro ritorno; nel 1316
