Família muito antiga, e uma das primeiras na costa de Amalfi. Um Marino foi o primeiro prefeito de Amalfi, depois eleito pelos Amalfi e Atranesi como duque ou doge daquela república. Depois dele, outros membros da mesma família ocupavam um cargo tão eminente. Um Gerardo e um Manfredo Sava participaram da primeira Cruzada; um Riccardo, em 1162, tornou-se altamente contestável na região da Apúlia e possuía o interior de Fondi. Seus filhos Ruggero e Tancredi foram criados, um primeiro conde de Alba e o outro conde de Gravina. Desde então, a casa Sava sempre cresceu em autoridade e poder, tornando-se senhores membros de Taufagi e Casali em 1191, conde de Calvi e Trivento, de Ariano e d'Apice em 1280, barões de Pirripidi e Calamonici em 1450, e de Nevoli e Scala em 1604.
