Selon certaines reconstructions héraldiques, la famille Savassi est une branche de la noble famille Sava de Naples. La famille Sava est l'une des plus anciennes et des plus nobles de la côte amalfitaine. Il y est installé depuis des temps immémoriaux. Un Marin, par exemple, a d'abord été préfet d'Amalfi, puis a été élu duc ou doge de cette république. Après lui, d'autres de la même famille ont exercé des fonctions aussi éminentes. Un Gerardo et un et un Manfredo Sava ont participé à la première croisade; Riccardo en 1162 fut nommé grand connétable des Pouilles et eut le comté de Fondi.
