De acordo com algumas reconstruções heráldicas, a família Savassi é um ramo da nobre família Sava de Nápoles. A família Sava é uma das mais antigas e nobres da Costa Amalfitana. Está estabelecido lá desde tempos imemoriais. Um Marino, por exemplo, foi inicialmente prefeito de Amalfi, depois foi eleito duque ou doge dessa república. Depois dele, outros da mesma família sustentaram cargos tão eminentes. Um Gerardo e um e um Manfredo Sava participaram da Primeira Cruzada; Riccardo em 1162 foi feito grande condestável da Apúlia e teve o condado de Fondi.
